Not long ago. in a large city in tbe North, a very wealthy man who bad grown rich by dishouest meth ods cave a reception to which he invited scores upon scores of distin guished men, financiers, lawyer, judges of the court and business men of prominence. They sat at the same : board with him and so far as they could gave him social standing by their presence. It-was a brilliant gathering of the. wealth, the culture, the learn ing and the high morality of tbe community assembled to honor a man devoid of all these qualities except wealth alone. Yet he might have been entitled to the distinction accorded him if h"iB wealth had been acquired honestly, through hard labor, enterprise and wise investments, such as have laid the foundation for many American fortunes. He had the wealth which is the symbol of suc cess, and the symbol alone was recognized by the crowd of wor shippers. There was probably not a man present who did not know that the foundation of the great fortune so lavishly displayed in the house furniture and decora tions bad been laid with money successfully stolen from the public funds; that this money, being in vested in semi-public enterprises and used to corrupt public men, employed to create a monopoly by which vast sums of money were extorted from the very poor, and that when millions bad been accumulated tbe force of the money power bad made it still more productive. The man bad achieved success.
